Vasilis Romanos
A Painting Journey from the Sea to Paxos

Biography

Vasilis Romanos was born in Athens in 1937, with roots in Paxos. He worked for many years in the Greek merchant navy, and from 1975 he traveled around the world — images and emotions that were later artistically captured on canvas.

In 1995, he settled permanently in Paxos and devoted himself to painting. As described, he is self-taught: he studied the works of other artists, incorporating influences while maintaining his own personal style — particularly marked by strong geometric forms inspired by cubism.

Style & Inspiration

The painting of Vasilis Romanos is the result of a deep, personal journey - free from academic constraints, yet marked by consistency and maturity. As a self-taught artist, he developed his own visual language, drawing on influences from Cubism, which he transforms with freedom and a keen sense of balance. His forms, geometric and robust, do not adhere to strict rules, but follow an inner logic that expresses his personal worldview.

Light and color play a dominant role in his work. He chooses pure, harmonious tones that enhance the composition without creating tension. Each color has its own space, its own rhythm, and coexists with the others in a respectful, almost silent agreement. The sense of serenity that his paintings evoke is the result of this balance - not only technical, but also emotional.

Recurring themes in his work are often inspired by the landscapes of Paxos and his maritime experiences as a sailor. Houses, harbors, human figures, and seascapes come together in an abstract universe, where reality is transformed into form and feeling. Each of his works is a personal testament to life - not just as an image, but as lived experience. Painting brings him the same sense of peace that the sea once did, and that tranquility is passed on to the viewer.

Exhibitions, Activities & Distinctions

Vasilis Romanos has showcased his work through significant exhibitions in Greece and abroad, often choosing venues with a strong cultural and emotional resonance. Among these, the annual exhibition on Paxos stands out - a place that has been a constant source of inspiration and his home in recent years. Held every summer in Gaios, this exhibition supports the local community through its proceeds. The paintings displayed reflect the artist’s deep connection to the island’s landscape and its people.

At the same time, his works have been exhibited in Corfu, in venues of historical significance, highlighting the ongoing evolution of his artistic language. Viewers have the opportunity to follow his journey through compositions that blend geometric patterns, human figures, and a distinct, personal world of color.

On an international level, Vasilis Romanos has participated in both solo and group exhibitions in cities such as Athens, Paris, Lecce, Patras, and Milan, where he has been honored for his contribution to contemporary art. His presence in cultural dialogue events outside Greece affirms the strength and uniqueness of his artistic expression, which combines authenticity with international appeal.
